MATERIALS PROCESSING CORPORATION RAISES RECYCLER CERTIFICATION BAR

Mendota Heights, MN eCycling Leader Achieves R2 Certification; Adds to ISO14001, ISO9001 Environmental and Quality Standards

Minneapolis, Min., April 28, 2010 – Materials Processing Corporation (MPC), one of the few electronics recyclers in the country to hold the highest environmental and quality accreditation possible is now R2 (Responsible Recyclers) certified. The move comes as part of MPC’s ongoing commitment to raising the bar on standards of professionalism, quality and service across the entire electronics recycling industry.

“If there’s an environmental certification or standard to meet in our industry, it’s important to MPC to meet and exceed that standard,” says Todd Schachtman, President Global Business Development, MPC. “As a national leader in a very fragmented industry, we are obligated to lead by example.  Commitment to nationally and internationally agreed upon standards provides the framework to provide our clients and business partners with total transparency, the most rigorous possible asset disposition and eCycling processes and, of course, complete peace of mind.”

R2 certification is a voluntary process whereby electronics recyclers undergo external auditing to assure best management practices for both environmental and health and safety standards and operations for employees. The audit is conducted by The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) – the American Society for Quality (ASQ) National Accreditation Board (ANAB), The ANAB assesses and accredits certification bodies that demonstrate competence to audit and certify organizations that are conforming to management systems standards.  Upon a positive recommendation, certification is granted.

Voluntary auditing and standards certification is not new to MPC. The company was one of the first eCyclers to seek and attain both IS09001 quality and ISO14001 environmental certification, both of which require a lengthy and intricate auditing process. In March of this year MPC renewed both certifications. The company is also a leading member of the Basel Action Network’s (BAN) eWaste Stewardship program, an initiative to eradicate the unsanctioned shipping of toxic e-waste materials to developing nations and is also preparing to become certified under BAN’s new certification program this summer.

“R2 certification, for MPC, is really a validation of the management system and processes that we stand by in order to mitigate data security risks for our clients, prevent the pollution of our environment, and protect the health and safety of our employees.” says Theresa J. Bauer, Director of Compliance, EHSS, MPC.

Siemens Teams With Materials Processing Corp. (MPC) for Secure, Green Recycling of Control Systems

Partnership provides best practice expertise for secure recycling in the United States

ORLANDO, Fla., Dec. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Siemens Energy, Inc. and Materials Processing Corporation (MPC) today announce a partnership to provide a secure, green recycling solution to the electric utility industry. The service will help utilities dispose of end-of-life electronic components in a safe and environmentally responsible manner. It will also assist them in achieving compliance with the North American Electric Reliability Corporation's Cyber Infrastructure Protection standards.

The service provided by Siemens and MPC allows electronic components such as computers for supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and energy management systems (EMS), remote terminal units (RTUs), protective relays and meters to be picked up at the utility's site where a quick destruction is performed and witnessed by a representative of the utility. Siemens collects the equipment and securely transports it to MPC's recycling center where the equipment is disassembled, sorted, shredded and ultimately recycled. Security and environmental controls are in place throughout the process, and the heuristic recycling process is completed when all possible minerals are recovered. Nothing goes to a landfill.

"There are many documented cases of hackers recovering critical information from discarded computer equipment and using it to break into systems. This partnership will ensure that no one can recover information from memory devices and use the information to attack our energy infrastructure," stated Paul Skare, director of cyber security at Siemens Energy, Inc. "MPC provides best-in-class electronics recycling with secure destruction of all storage devices, as well as the tracking and auditing that meet utilities' needs. We're especially pleased that MPC helps us to provide a necessary service in an environmentally responsible way."

"The electronics recycling industry has come a long way in the last few years," says Todd Schachtman, president, global business development, Materials Processing Corporation. "It's no longer just about recycling electronics efficiently, it is about providing companies with peace of mind that their often highly sensitive data has been destroyed to the highest possible governmental standards and in a way that doesn't damage the environment. At MPC we're dedicated to helping our customers go about their daily and future business worry-free when it comes to everything from absolute data privacy to being responsible corporate citizens."

The Siemens Energy Sector is the world's leading supplier of a complete spectrum of products, services and solutions for the generation, transmission and distribution of power and for the extraction, conversion and transport of oil and gas.
